LO2 - Analysing a Radio Show

Plan for a new talk and music radio show.
Name - Quizzicle.

a) My radio show idea is intended for Sheffield Live! radio station to broadcast.

b) The target age-range will be 15 -20 year olds.

The contestants (may) be of this age so they will relate to them as associate with their sense of humour.  The show talks about trending subjects that they will be likely to know or will want to know about.

Quizzicle will appeal to those who enjoy knowing about/mocking current trends along with added nostalgic factors. Quizzicle has no targeted gender as the shows is not aimed towards one specific gender, allowing for a larger target audience. Teams will be made up of males and females.

 c) Content plan...
For Quizzicle's content, the show will feature: -
*Quizzes (and mini-quizzes)
*One main game (and mini-games)
*Advertisements/Sponsors
*The jingle
*Music snippets/segments (Part of games and quizzes)

d) Quizzicle's content in running order: -

First 5 minutes – Introduction of the host, show and contestants. First mini-quiz.
Next 15 minutes – The main game of the show and mini games/quizzes.
Last 5 minutes – Final quiz. Announcement of winning team.
e) Below is a rough sample script for the  layout of the show introduction.

f) Production schedule

g) A PRS is required for Quizzicle to air snippets of these pieces of music to supply as answers; if Quizzicle cannot get copyright permission to air certain songs/pieces of music, then an suitable alternative song/pieces of music will be used or the question relating to it will be cut. When creating the jingle we shall attempt to find a piece of music that is free domain or easy to access without breaking any copyright laws.

All our content shall be checked against Ofcom regulations so that no profanity or any other offensive content is featured pre-release.

Both our ideas for audio products are podcasts, meaning they are pre-recorded so if any profanity or any other offensive content is used we can edit that out either by cutting it completely out or putting a beep. Though we would check beforehand with the cast that they make sure not to use any of the above legal issues in pre-production meetings held here at UTC Sheffield or Sheffield Live!

Also because it is a podcast time the time of broadcast is not necessarily an issue. The content would be suitable for all ages, (though not necessarily to everybody's liking due to the subject of broadcast), so there would be no need to release it at a certain time, after the watershed for example.

Copyright is the exclusive and assignable legal right, given to the originator for a fixed number of years, to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical material.

h)  I plan on Quizzicle being aired at 4:00pm on a Thursday, hammocked between Sheffield Live! Jukebox and Sounzaboutright. Sheffield Live! Jukebox is a show that focuses on playing music, making it easy listening before the quiz show, which doesn't play as much music but still plays snippets of popular songs.  Sounzaboutright shares a similar style to Quizzicle as it plays music and has conversations in between on different subjects, usually relating to what's in the news.

LO1 - Task 2 - Analysing a radio show

Chosen Sheffield Live! Audio Product

My chosen Sheffield Live! audio product is Downright Nostalgia.

http://www.sheffieldlive.org/player/podcast_url.php?show=Downright%20Nostalgia

Running Order

Downright Nostalgia is an hour long radio segment aired once a week on a Thursday at 2:00pm, hammocked between hour long shows X-Rated (a news, reviews and chat show) and Sheffield Live! Jukebox (a music request show). Downright Nostalgia works well within this time-slot as it helps the transition from a chat show to a music show as it features both elements of chat and music.

Advertisements and information are played beforehand. The show starts with the jingle which introduces the show. The host(s) will then introduce themselves and the show, before announcing the first requested song, who requested the song and where they're from, the song title and artist(s), and then play the record. The show continues with the host talking a bit about certain subjects and then introducing the next record as they start playing it.

DJs/Presenters

Downright Nostalgia is presented by DJ's Trev Clarke and Lynn Clarke. Trev Clarke states that he was a teenager in the 50's, so he'll remember many of the songs they play on the show and will remember pieces of information relating to the song/album/artist(s), which he will discuss during broadcasts.

As well as presenting the show, Trev and Lynn also serve as disk jockeys, playing the requested pieces of music, at some points delivering a fore warning that their might be some technical difficulties due to their own technical skills and old age of some of the pieces of music/records, which can cause issues.

Content

Downright Nostalgia plays, as the name suggests, nostalgic music; in this case, this nostalgic music is music from the 1930's to the 1960's. It contain recollections by the host(s) about the pieces of music being playing and the decades they were released.

Target Audience

Due to the music used and the fact that they describe it as nostalgic, their target audience are people who grew up with this so older generations who lived in these decades, or at least grew up listening to music of these time periods. For example, the hosts of the show are roughly the mean of their audience target age-range, so they fit into their own demographic, probably so that the listeners can relate to them.

This show also appeals to those who are fans of the music of these genres/decades, so the presenters try to involve them in the show by speaking it an informal way that they believe may relate to them. However, their main focus is still the targeted older audience, so their tones are calm and relaxing by talking about memories based on the time the next song came out and sometime just sharing anecdotes or stories about those time or what's currently happening within the studio.

2/3/15 - Learning Outcomes

LO - To identify the programmes and audiences of Sheffield Live!/music technologies.

Sheffield Live! is an independent station and a community station.

LO1 - Task 1 - Investigating a radio station

Programme Types

Sheffield Live! is an independent station and a community station, which means that it doesn't own or belong to any other companies and is not commercial radio station; it is made and suited for the local community.

Sheffield Live! runs a variety of different radio shows throughout the day, including Cool Beans Radio Show, Peace in the Park, and the Saturday Sound Clash.

Genres

Sheffield Live! run a number of shows of different genres and styles. These include their news and current affairs shows, their talk/chat/interview shows, their sports related/results shows and the biggest output - music shows. The music shows feature a variety of music genres, including reggae, R'n'B and indie pop to name a few.

They play music shows featuring music from different cultures, such as Aaj Ka Sambrang and Africabeats - two shows that play Asian and African music.

Some music shows play music of certain time periods, like Downright Nostalgia, which supplies music from the 30's to 60's to create a nostalgic radio show.

Some shows, for example Talking Balls, report and review the latest local sport results.

Audience Profile(s)

Sheffield Live! radio station, as a community radio, is operated for the purpose of the community, in this case it is to benefit Sheffield residents. Sheffield Live! is aimed at serving the community by targeting under-served groups within Sheffield. As Sheffield Live! is independent, they require social gain from growing suburban Sheffield audience groups.

The shows on Sheffield Live! vary so that they can appeal to different people in different Yorkshire communities and make sure that they are not limiting themselves to one specific audience type.

Due to the way Sheffield Live! has chosen to prioritise their shows by putting the audience groups first, they have been awarded by Ofcom for the community broadcasting skills by following radio broadcasting regulations.

It has been discovered through surveys results that Sheffield Live! recieve a weekly audience of 11%, in terms of TSA audience figures. This equates roughly to 32,000 listeners on a weekly basis.

Although Sheffield Live! is intended for all Sheffield residents, the station's main focus points, to name a few, include Burngreave, Darnall, Manor, Broomhill, and Walkley. From the stations research into audience figures, these are possibly the locations where the receive a majority of their listeners.

The ABC1 for Sheffield Live! is C1-D.

Written profile of target audience member - My name is Steven, I'm in my 30's and I live in Burngreave. I enjoy listening to reggae and African music when driving.

Production Process

Different radio job roles -
*DJ (Disk-jockey) (Host) - The DJ will often serve as a host on a radio show, as they'll present and talk on the show, sometimes interviewing/chatting with guests. They will also introduce the next song, the artist(s), and be responsible for playing all the songs/tracks/records.

*Scriptwriters - Scriptwriters can be acquired to develop a script by creating and planning the host's dialogue and the show's content. The scriptwriter(s) would work closely with the host(s) as they must have an agreement on the show's style, content, formality and delivery - making sure they are comfortable or at least understand the decisions made and why it has been done this way.

*Marketing team - A marketing team are used if a radio station/show decides that they wish to feature advertisements in their show. Marketing teams do business with other companies to come to an agreement of whether it will or will not be featured in the show and, if it is, how much profit both parties will receive from this.

*Technical support - Technicians are important for a radio show recording, as they are responsible for checking the technical equipment and that it's all working the way it should before recording starts. Technicians are significant as they are needed to avoid any technical errors/'malfunctions'.

Market Share

BBC Radio Sheffield are the main competitors of Sheffield Live! as they are both radio shows that are aired and targeted at people who live with Sheffield. Both radio stations include different radio segments hosted by a variety of different hosts/DJ's who appeal to different and specific people.

What separates these two radio stations is that BBC Radio Sheffield is owned by a well established mass media company, the BBC, who create radio stations for counties and communities across the UK. Meanwhile Sheffield Live! is a radio station created specifically for Sheffield, and has no other stations at any other locations, so the listeners understand that this show is created specifically for them.
